Admissions Requirements for our Nursing Degree


Our nursing students meet rigorous admission standards for acceptance into our Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Adherence to these standards is one of the reasons we are nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing. At GU/MSB-Richfield, students who apply to our bachelor’s in nursing program are required to meet the following admission requirements.

Nursing degree requirements

Applicants with college level coursework must have:

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or greater for all college level coursework taken
  • Transcripts for all institutions attended
  • Passing grades with a letter grade of C or better in all liberal arts courses required for the nursing degree
  • A GPA of 2.75 or greater from the time of acceptance to the program to the start of first quarter nursing courses

Applicants with a high school diploma must have:

  • A minimum high school class rank at the 60th percentile, or a minimum GED score at the 60th percentile
  • A grade of C or better in high school or college level biology and chemistry (with labs) completed within five years of the application
  • Copy of high school transcript and course syllabus for each class

All applicants to our nursing degree program  must have

  • Documentation of completion within the last five years, with a passing grade, of a federally approved nursing assistant (NA) class

    Or
  • Experience within the last five years as a nursing assistant, with documentation of experience on letterhead from the employer

    Or
  • A passing grade on the NATO (Nursing Assistant Test-Out) exam within the last five years

  • Current listing on the Nursing Assistant Registry in Minnesota

Accuplacer results and assessment testing

  • The student must be tested in reading comprehension and earn an Accuplacer score of 90 or greater
  • The student must place into college level English composition with an Accuplacer score of 87 or greater or complete CM121 with a grade of C or better or have completed an equivalent transfer course

Additional requirements apply to ELL or ESL applicants.

Required before acceptance into the nursing degree program

  • Transcripts from all institutions attended
  • Current resume that includes all positions held within the past 10 years, awards received, association memberships, community service and documentation of computer literacy skills
  • Personal goal statement that describes the applicant’s education and career goals as they relate to the profession of nursing at the baccalaureate level
  • Two letters of recommendation from professional or personal associates
  • Current CPR certification for infant, child and adult, one and two person resuscitation, facemask and external defibrillator
  • Current evidence of health and physical exam by a licensed physician or designee
  • Proof of immunization or immunity
  • Documentation of functional abilities and strength
  • Background study
  • Signed acknowledgement of the requirements of the programs

Students in the nursing program are encouraged to provide their own health insurance during their participation in the program. Neither GU/MSB nor clinical internship sites provide health coverage.
